5.A. - Page 5
Station enforcement activities. District Attorney's Office personnel assigned to
this effort are asked to continually evaluate enforcement plans for conformance
to statutory and constitutional requirements. Additionally, participants in this
collaborative relationship have increased the level of investigative completeness
and case viability specific to cases emanating from enforcement activities at
Sequoia Station.
Results to Date
The process of building collaborative relationships with mental health agencies,
homeless advocacy services, business owners and other stakeholders has
provided favorable outcomes that have far-exceed its original purpose. In terms
of human interest, a number of homeless individuals have been connected with
supportive services, while others in need of treatment for alcohol and substance
addictions have been paired with those services.
Established expectations and agreements between local mental health agencies
and the Department have resulted in greater accountability associated with
practices affecting mental health clients at Sequoia Station. The previous
practice of infusing unsupervised clients into Sequoia Station has been
minimized. Going forward, the Department will take steps to solidify agreements
with mental health providers that ensure their clients are better evaluated for
potential successful acclimatization at Sequoia Station, before being taken there
by attending staff.
While the Sequoia Station Safety Plan has been underway for just a few weeks,
anecdotal reports from some businesses indicate a 30-35% increase in sales
over this period.
The Department has also received numerous acknowledgements from Redwood
City residents and others who frequent Sequoia Station denoting a pronounced
improvement in the sense of safety and security at the center.
