1 Projectescrition
bulldozer, and a small truck. Assuming the use of 12-cubic yard dump txucks, the removaZ of
excavated materials associated with the pedestrian undercrossing would result in oTer 196 truck
trips, at an average of 20 da.iy truck trips during this phase of the project. Prelinarp testing
indicates that the soils can be classified as CZass II "designated"nonhazardous wastes, which can be
disposed of at landfills permitted to accept these wastes. Sois within the project area consist
ptimarily of Young and Old Bay Mud. Por to disposal othe excavated soil, aadiionasoil
sampling and testing would occux to deterniuie if liquid cancentrations would be released during
dasposal. When necessary, the contractor would spread Bay Mud soils in rows to dry or mixed them
with other excavated soils on site so that the transported materials would meet the landfill disposal
criteria.
A tieback retaining wall would be instalZed along the face of the existing north side abutment in
order to maintain the integxity of the bridge support and roadwap embankment. This rieback
retaining wall would utilize horizontal tiebacks approxinately 30-feet long that would be suppoted
by rieback anchors iocated between the existing abutment piles. Crews wouJd use a small drilt
machine to install the riebacks because of the limited headroom and working space. Spoils from the
drilling operation would be removed and disposed of off-site. The driIled holes would be filled with
cement grout. Approximately 80 cubic yaras of shotcrete would be neeaed for the tieback wall.
After installation of the tie-back tetaining wall, crews would excavate the creek bank and drive in
micro-piles to support the concrete path aiong with the creek-side retainitag waU.. Approxunately
44 micro-piles extending up to 30-feet deep may be needed to pxotiide vertical support of the path.
Once the micro-piles are in place, detention drainage pipes, drain inlets, and discharge pipes to the
cteek would be installed. Finally, the slab footing of the path would be constructed alang with the
creek-side wal.
Crews would perform electrical work fox the pedestrian lighting and installation of the access gates
and call boxes aftex the concrete work under the bridge is complete. Landscape walls and the
pedestrian sidewalk would be consttucted, and aIl landscaping can be dane to restoe the area near
the bridge.
The work in tle City-owned parcel would involve inuiunal clearing and gubbing as well as some
roxgh grading. The sidewalk ancjoint-use path would be installed along with the landscape trees,
pedestrian streedights, and the scenic overlook area. Iinimallandscaping would be needed to
restore the site.
1.5.3 Project Schedule
Constxuction of the storm drain pump station would take appronately 120 working days, from
January 2014 to June 2014. Construction af the US 101 pedestrian undercrossing wauld take
approxirnately 150 working days, from June 2014 to December 2014. Weekday construction hours
would be limited to 7:30 am to 4:00 prn,Monday through Friday,excluding City-recognized
holidas.
1-8 US 109 Pedestrian Undercro,rsfngand
Bairlsland Storrra Drain Punp Station Project
