Each core will be opened and described using standard soils and geomorphological
techniques. Natural and or cultural stratigraphy will be identified whenever possible by
carefully examining each core. If any paleosols or artifact-bearing soil horizons are
encountered, they will be screened through wire mesh to recover any potential cultural
constituents. Stratigraphic units (strata) and soil horizons will be idented based on
physicai characteristics such as composition, color, superposition, textural transitions,
and pedogenic properties (i.e., relative soil development). Master soil horizons will be
defined using standard United States Department of Agriculture soil taxonomy (Soil
Survey Staff 2006). The locations of each bore will be recorded using a GPS device and
plotted on high-resolution aerial photographs.
A maximum of two samples will be submitted to Beta Analytic, Inc. for radiocarbon
dating. Samples will consist of either plant material or bulk sediment. The radiocarbon
samples will be used to determine the timing and duration of deposition and landscape
stability throughout the APE. Samples wiil be selected in order to provide information on
the initiation and cessation of deposition as well as the absolute duration of landscape
stability. Samples will be selected in order to date extensive buried surfaces, and verify
correlations based on pedogenic indicators observed in the field.
A buried cultural deposit, if found, will be considered intact if the surrounding soil matrix
has not been disturbed and the deposit is situated within a natural stratigraphic context.
Should intact deposits be identified, Phase II evaluation of the site may be necessary,
and recommendations will be made. Such Phase II evaluations are not included in this
Scope of Work. In the event that an intact cultural deposit is identified and cannot be
avoided by project impacts, Consultant will consult with City about the need to conduct
Phase II excavations to evaluate whether a site is eligible for inclusion in the National
Register of Historic Places for Section 106 compliance on federal undertakings.
Task 3: Technical Reqort - A brief draft technical report of findings will be produced and
submitted to Caltrans and City for review. The report will summarize analysis of
observed subsurface profiles, results of radiocarbon dating analysis, the potential for the
proposed project to affect buried archaeological sites, and relevant recommendations
for mitigation measures if necessary.
Consultant will attend one focused meeting with Caltrans to discuss the draft technical
report and receive comments. Meeting notes will document the discussion and
comments, and they will be incorporated into a final technical report, which will be
submitted to Caltrans and the City, and integrated into Consultant's respective existing
cultural resources reports.
REV:04-07-15 VR
A-5
ATTY/AGR.Amend No.2/URS
