The Wellesley Land and Improvement Company,a San Francisco-based corporation who marketed pastoral living to wealthy San Franciscans,subdivided the Wellesley Park Tract in 1889.Advertising country life within commuting distance,Wellesley Park, consisted of 160 acres,which,according to the promotional brochure,were°luxuriantly dotted with umbrageous white oaks and [had] a fall of fifty-four feet from the western to eastern boundary."Located just east of Redwood City,the previously undeveloped land had been known as the Richardson Tract before it was acquired by the Wellesley Land Improvement Company and had been"long regarded as one of the most desirable places to live in the valley."The residential tract was originally developed as something of a residential park that was°highly improved and of a strictly exclusive nature,"not unlike the earlier park-like suburban developments in the eastern states.The Land Improvement Company erected a prominent stone entry gate at Wellesley Avenue and San Jose Road(now El Camino Real)and a Gate Lodge erected south of the stone entrance that was to be the Park superintendent's residence. Originally,Avondale,Wellesley(now Edgewood)and Claremont Avenues led from San Jose Road to the main entrance at Wellesley Park Crescent.From here,Arlington and Edgewood Roads meandered in a southwesterly direction,converging before they met Ashley Avenue(now Turnsworth Ave.)at the opposite end of the development(see map below).Melrose Place provided a link between Arlington and Edgewood at roughly the center of the development.Wellesley Crescent was planned as the public recreation ground for residents and was embellished with"two superb Abyssinian lions...standing upon basalt pedestals."In addition,the crescent boasted tropical tree specimens,massive oaks,and was home to"a pair of large white owls,who...[would] flit through the Park on moonlight nights in pursuit of any stray field-mice that may be enjoying the scenic effects"("Views in Wellesley Park",1889(See Continuation Sheet).
