Despite the amenities, the parcels in Wellesley Park remained largely undeveloped into the first two decades of the
20t1i century.The 1919 Sanborn map shows sparse development,with only a handful of scattered 1 to 1-1/2 story
dwellings;Oakdale,Warwick,Stratford and Somerset Streets had also been added by that time. The majority of
Wellesley Park developed in the 1920s and 1930s,with some later development in the 1940s and 1950s.Sanborn maps
from 1950 indicate that the residential tract had been almost fully developed by mid-century.While some residences
in the neighborhood today have since been significantly modified, and some new development has occurred, many of
the early residences still retain a high degree of integrity and the neighborhood as a whole evokes a strong sense of
place as an early pre-WWI suburban development.
The property at 842 Edgewood Road was built by Louis A.Behrens and his wife Clara.Mr.Behrens was born in
Redwood City and work in the local banking industry. His family lived in RWC since 1890 and his father Ludwig P.
Behrens organized the Bank of San Mateo County in RWC.Mr and Mrs Behrens raised four children: Clara Lou,
Janet,Phillip and Robert.Mr Behres was a prominent businessman in Redwood City.
Evaluation:
The residence at 842 Edgewood Road was built during the major development period of Wellesley Park and is an
early and intact example of the Tudor Revival style. It exhibits many characteristic features of the style including the
two-plus story form and asymetrical plan,intersecting-gables and steeply pitched roof, half timbering with stucco
siding, casement windows of varius sizes and arrangements.Although there is an addition it is not visible from the
street and does not distract from the original, historic portion of the residence.
The finding of this review is that the property at 842 Edgewood Road meets Redwood City's Historic Designation
Criteria A: "...exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City's cultural, aesthetic or architectural history".It is
individually eligible for listing at the local level as an excellent example of the Tudor Revival style in Wellesley Park.
