MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST <br />A. Legislation (information only) - This sub - section involves possible discussion of <br />City Position on Proposed Legislation described in the League of California Cities <br />Priority Focus Bulletin No. 5 -2004 and No. 6 -2004. Council may direct staff to act <br />on positions taken by Council. (Copies of League of California Cities Priority Focus <br />available in City Clerk's Department.) <br />8. ADJOURNMENT — 8:00 p.m. (206) <br />Mayor Ira requested adjournment in memory of Dr. Phillip Apffel, father of Vice Mayor <br />Barbara Pierce, who passed away on February 17, 2004 at the age of 87. Dr. Apffel <br />had moved to Redwood City in 2001 after spending his life in New Jersey and was <br />married for 61 years to Claire, who still resides with Vice Mayor Pierce. He served five <br />years in the U.S. Navy as a medical doctor tending sailors during WWII on Naval <br />ships in Okinawa and Hiroshima. Professionally, he was never retired serving as a <br />consultant to juvenile court for various agencies, Director of Mental Health clinics, and <br />private practice for more than 40 years. His passion was for child psychiatry and he <br />was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology to work with adults <br />as well. In 1992, he was honored with a Golden Merit Award from the Medical Society <br />of New Jersey for 50 years of distinguished service as a practicing physician and he <br />was a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. <br />M/S Hartnett/Pierce to the next Regular City Council meeting of March 1, 2004 in <br />memory of Dr. Phillip Apffel.
