. . I I . -
how we do our work, and also how the citizens are represented. I think the sooner we can
get to that the better."
-
Mayor Howard directed the City Manager to place this subject on next week's agenda.
(205)
MEMO 2/3/98
--______n_____-------------------------______n______--___n__________n______---------------------------------_____n___-
B. Community Promotion - Contribution to Sequoia High School Spirit Squad for their trip
to Hawaii to perform their Pep Squad routine at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii on February
1,1998; (205)
Council Member Claire said he wanted to make a motion that the City of Redwood City
contribute $2,000 to the Sequoia High School Spirit Squad to come ITom the City's reserve
account, but instruct the Mayor to challenge the Mayor of San Carlos to match those
funds.
In response to Council Member Claire's question, Finance Director Ponty advised that
the City had $8.9 million in its Umeserved General Fund Fund Balance.
Council Member Claire said he believed that maybe up to half of the cheerleaders lived
in San Carlos, and it would be appropriate for San Carlos to also support the Spirit Squad's
- trip to Hawaii, and reimburse Redwood City $1,000 of the $2,000 the City had pledged.
Council Member Hartnett said although he believed it was a worthwhile cause to
support, he was uncomfortable on how it came to the Council and the amount of money
requested. He said he didn't think the Council wanted to encourage people to request
funds at the last minute, especially when in fact they already had the money. Council
Member Hartnett said a former Council Member had encouraged the Spirit Squad to come
to the Council at the last minute, even though they knew they were going to make the trip
for a long time. He said had the Council received the request earlier it might have been
able to help them earn more money through joint ventures, perhaps with Redwood City
2000 as a community promotion event. Council Member Hartnett cautioned that the
Council should be careful of the precedent it sets.
Councilman Leipzig asked that his comments ITom last week "be rolled over to this
week. .. except the dollar amount would be changed."
Mayor Howard said she had long supported a line item in the budget to cover these kinds
of situations, with specific guidelines on how the funds should be expended, similar to the
HHCC and Civic Cultural Commission. She asked that a budget for community
promotion be discussed during the budget process.
MEMO 2/3/98
-
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 FEBRUARY 2. 1998
MINUTES Page No. 239 PAGE 24
