Carole Ford, 360 Bowsprit, also suggested appointment of a Redwood Shores resident to the Redwood City Council, and said there were many qualified candidates in Redwood Shores. Ms. Ford strongly recommended appointment of Laverne Atherly and provided his background of community service as a tireless advocate. She also said she, Pat Dixon and Colleen Jordan were well qualified for the position, and provided facts of their distinguished service to the community. Colleen Jordan, 84 Eddystone Court, spoke as a resident of Redwood City and a Board Member of the Redwood Shores Home Owners Association. She described her lovely home in idyllic Redwood Shores. Ms. Jordan said the Redwood Shores Homeowners Association newsletter, The Pilot, was an amazingly easy way to communicate with Redwood Shores residents. Ms. Jordan said she was disturbed to find out that Redwood Shores has had to fight to defend their interests on many occasions, especially since Redwood Shores businesses pour tax dollars into the City "while we pay for most of our own improvements... and subsidize our neighbors to the south." Ms. Jordan urged the Council to appoint a Redwood Shores resident. John Murphy, 421 Luff Lane, referring to the letter he sent to the Council, confirmed his request for appointment to the Council. He said his expertise would compliment the arts and skills of the present Council Member. He provided his background on the Planning Commission, with labor negotiations, and an investment committee. Mr. Murphy said he is current on all items before the Council, and would be an active representative for the Council. He said unless an appointment was made at this meeting, almost 25 days of the allotted 60 days would elapse before the next Council meeting of February 23,1998. Mr. Murphy said he would be an independent Council Member, and he was ready, willing and able to work with the Council for the betterment of Redwood City. Council Member Claire told the audience that Mr. Murphy had been an outstanding Redwood City Planning Commissioner, and thanked him for his service to Redwood City. LaVerne Atherly, 515 Cringle Drive, Redwood Shores, said it was his contention that an election should be held to select someone to fill the Council vacancy. He said it was his interpretation of the Charter that the word shall means the Council could appoint. Mr. Atherly said it was his recommendation to "let the candidates duke it out" in an election campaign. Andy Frisch, 552 Alameda, San Carlos, who works at 3631 Jefferson, Redwood City, said he read in all the local newspapers about the decision the Council might make at this meeting, and "it was clearly portrayed in our public media... and it was clear to me that you might appoint someone tonight." Mr. Frisch described Ian Bain's long tenure at Kainos and the awards he had earned, his work on the Board of Directors of Project Read, his work with the Housing and Human Concerns Committee and Redwood City Clean-up days.
