- . . . . -
Council Member Leipzig recommended the use of signs stating "Cross Traffic Does Not
Stop" at two-way intersections, and suggested that those signs might alleviate some
- requests for four-way stop signs. He agreed with Manager Patterson that stop signs don't
always slow down traffic, can cause more accidents, and can cause a false sense of
security, particularly at crosswalks.
MEMO 2/24/98
In answer to Council Member Leipzig's questions, Traffic Engineer Haygood said there
are over 20 requests for four-way stops signs pending. Manager Patterson said some
requests have not been filled because staff was looking at speed humps or other traffic
calming devices that might be better solutions. He said the proposed guidelines would
enable staff to choose the best alternatives.
MEMO 2/24/98
Mayor Pro Tern Ruskin cautioned staff to go slowly installing speed humps, so that
neighbors can see if they like them, and whether they actually do the job. He said, "the
fewer we put in as a test, the fewer we have to take out if we don't like them."
Mayor Pro Tern Ruskin asked if anyone in the audience wished to speak to this issue.
Colleen Jordan, 84 Eddystone, asked for a list of stop signs to be considered on March 16
and a copy of the guidelines.
- Mayor Pro Tern Ruskin asked Traffic Engineer Haygood to provide the information Ms.
Jordan requested.
MEMO 2/24/98
3) MIS: HARTNETTIIRA.
