He thanked Mayor Howard for her support for beautifying EI Camino Real, but cautioned against relying on volunteers to help in planting, as it is far more technical than people think. Vice Mayor Ruskin said improving commercial thoroughfares is a business decision, "hopefully it will increase the interest businesses have in coming- here, settling here, and will ultimately increase City revenues." Council Member Claire said he concurred with the need for playing fields and suggested that the City work with Canada College to have the fields opened up to Redwood City users. He said he scheduled Senior League Baseball for twelve years and as long as they could use Canada College they did well, but when it is removed, there are scheduling problems. Council Member Claire said Canada has a soccer field that would be very helpful to the City if it could be used by Redwood City soccer groups. He said the City forgave $75,000 in water penalties so Canada could maintain its fields based upon the agreement that the City could have access to them, and he suggested the City remind the College of that commitment. Councilman Claire said that there is a potential for an additional field at Canada College, its football field, which is in Woodside. He said there were issues of mutual concern with Canada College, and asked that the City contact the College and pursue this issue. - MEMO 3/24/98 In response to Mayor Howard's comments, City Manager Everett said that the requested staff report would include information on rest rooms in the parks. City Manager Everett summarized Council's input, stating that staff will review the $500,000 in the General Fund for both years after the 4th quarter sales tax report is submitted to the City. He said staff will bring back a list of projects and funding so Council can decide which projects belong in which Council priorities. City Manager Everett said the discussion had been very helpful to staff, and he thanked Community Development Director Nelson and her team for the enormous amount of information they provided. He thanked Superintendent Hover for proposing a twenty-year facility building and maintenance plan, which had never been done before, but was done in response to Council's direction to engage in long term planning.
