7. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A. San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA) presentation
regarding "Permit Streamlining;"
Mayor Howard announced that a SAMCEDA representative could not attend the
meeting and therefore this item would be postponed to afuture Council meeting.
MEMO 4/7/98
B. Discussion of the City's Web Site - Council Member Ian Bain; (205)
Council Member Bain showed slides and accessed the Internet to show the City's Web
Site. He said he believed "The Web Site is a major communications tool that we are not
taking full advantage of. We can use our Web Site to project an image of the City and we
can (include items) of real value to the Site that our citizens would really appreciate."
Council Member Bain showed the City's Web Site and other cities' Sites, and said
Redwood City's Site does not project a coherent look. He recommended that the
Redwood City Home Page show the new City Hall and archway, and the whole Site be
what is called a "frame space site which would have a navigation bar on the left side, with
categories and... the City's logo remaining visible at all times." He suggested that
valuable information would attract more visitors to the Site, such as "Where do my tax
dollars go?" Council Member Bain suggested that the Site contain the status of City
projects, Code violations, and other information that is now only available at City Hall.
He showed the Web Sites of the Cities of San Mateo and Mountain View which have
pictures and information about Council Members and how people can contact them. He
then showed what Redwood City's Site could look like.
Council Member Bain showed a "Site Map" with many categories, and recommended
that the Council focus on two areas, "The first one is community" which would list all the
churches in the community, organizations, such as Downtown Merchants, Service Clubs
such as Lions, Kiwanis, Optimists, Redwood City 2000, Redwood City International,
Neighborhood Associations, Chamber of Commerce, and links to other important Sites,
such as the School District and other non-profits. He said many non-profits could not
afford their own sites, and the City could help them by giving them space on our Site.
Council Member Bain said that the Government category could become a very valuable
site. He said Council agendas are already posted and recommended that the Council
Minutes be posted so people could really know what happened at the meeting. He also
suggested that historical material about the City and the Council be posted, as well as
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 APRIL 6, 1998
MINUTES Page No. 368 PAGE 8
