. . . I . .

Mayor Howard called upon those people in the audience who wished to speak to this
- Issue.
Susie Peyton, 3691 Brandy Rock Way, spoke on behalf of her neighbors, and said tonight
was truly a culmination of a great neighborhood effort. Mrs. Peyton described her
involvement with improving Stulsaft Park beginning in September, 1996 and said she was
thrilled that the plans had progressed to this point. Mrs. Peyton said that when the Council
directed staff to go forward with park improvements it brought two neighborhoods
together for the first time, and she said it had been a wonderful experience to meet her
neighbors and make new friends. Mrs. Peyton described the joint fund raising efforts the
neighbors were planning that they hoped would raise $30,000 for the two parks and would
demonstrate to the Council how committed they were to this vital improvement project.
She encouraged everyone to sign up and help the fundraising activities. She said she was
very glad the Council was listening to the community.
Enid Brock, 1837 Brewster, said she had also been a neighborhood representative of the
community on the park improvement project since its inception, and was a participant in
the selection of MIG. Mrs. Brock said the proposed plan represented a beautiful and
functional design which addressed the needs and wishes of all of its users. She described
the major elements and concerns of Stafford Park users: bringing the two very separate
play areas, into one secure, general area, yet separated into play areas for toddlers and
older children; shading the play area with a tree lined arbor that will also separate the
- toddlers from the older children; and the creative water and sand play area. Mrs. Brock
said MIG had done a great job and the proposed improvements would create a unique, yet
affordable, safe and fun place for children to play and everyone to enjoy.
Robert Slusser, member of the Park and Recreation Commission, said the Commission
endorsed and supported the proposed renovations and encouraged the Council to seriously
consider the conceptual plan. Mr. Slusser said he had attended the meetings and the
proposed designs accurately represented what the community had asked for. He said he
recognized the amount of resources it would take to complete the project, but Council
should consider it as an investment in the future of Redwood City. Mr. Slusser said that
Redwood City had done the right thing when building its new Library, new Red Morton
Center, and new City Hall, and this park improvement project was another opportunity to
"do it right."
Don Davis, member of the Park and Recreation Commission, agreed with Mr. Slusser, and
said the proposed $1,050,000 price tag for both parks roughly represented the cost of
purchasing two homes in Redwood City. He said quality neighborhoods needed quality
parks, and the neighbors were willing to work for these projects for their community. Mr.
Davis said it would take courage to go forward with this project and he encouraged the
Council to "do it now."
-
Adjourned Regular Meeting/Study Session MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 April 13, \998
Minutes Page No. 391 Page 5
