Review of Draft Sign Ordinance
REPORT: Senior Planner, Charles Jany
Senior Planner Jany introduced Contract Planner Bob Shubert, consultant
to the City.
Planner Shubert provided the background relating to the sign ordinance and
outlined the key goals to be included in the final draft ordinance. He stated that
the ordinance was adopted in the 1960's, it needed to be updated, and businesses
often put up signs without regard to the City's requirements and use. He
requested that the Sign Ordinance Workbook be completed by the group and
returned to Planning and Redevelopment by June I, 1998. He said the
information from this workbook would be combined and would serve as a
framework for the future ordinance. He reported that meetings would begin in
July, the new ordinance would be in effect by the end of the year, and
- enforcement would be a critical issue. He stated that 13 members worked on the
Sign Ordinance Focus Group and the key issues they reviewed were:
1. Temporary signs
2. Permanent signs
3. Wall signs
4. Signage in windows
5. Special standards for certain areas of the City, such as downtown,
Broadway, El Camino Real, gas stations, and fast food restaurants
Senior Planner Jany showed slides illustrating current issues relating to signs.
He reviewed the various types of signs that would be allowed and some that
would be deemed illegal.
Planning Commissioner Verdone commented that the City of San Mateo is
now encouraging lighted signs to bring back a historic flavor.
Director Nelson summarized the issues that were presented in the slide
show and discussed by the group.
-
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 MAY 26,1998
JOINT STUDY SESSION MINUTES Page No. 515 PAGE 10
CONCURRENT COUNCILIREDEVELOPMENT AGENCY MEETING
