, /
a man of great principle, he is a man of great sincerity, a man of great dedication
to the entire community. He is a person who believes in team work in
accomplishing that which is best for the community, not that which is best for
any particular individual. He is a man who is not caught up in dogma, but is
one who simply believes that he who serves best serves the best in the
community by exhibiting the highest ideals, by working hard, and by
remembering that when selected by the voters of Redwood City to serve the
community, that his highest calling is to do his best for the comrnunity to vote
his conscience not to simply count the numbers of names on a petition, but
count that which is best for all of the community. I believe that Council
Member Ira Ruskin will be a great Vice Mayor in our community and hope that
he will be selected by our colleagues."
Mayor Howard asked if there were any other nominations. There were none.
Couneil Member Ruskin was selected to serve as the Vice Mayor of the City
of Redwood City until the canvass of returns ofthe November 2,1999 Election,
by unanimous roll call vote.
-______n______----------______nn-_--__----_nn-----_--_----------------------------------------------------
8. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A. Comments from Council Members;
Mayor Howard called upon her colleagues to make final comments, and called
upon the newest Council Member JeffIra.
Council Member Ira said, "I would like to thank everyone for their votes and
support. It was overwhelming. As I told former Council Member La Berge, if
she was running... I know I wouldn't have entertained the thought of running. I
really appreciated everything she had done and her service to the City, and
certainly I am not looking to fill her shoes, but certainly I hope that I can
continue doing many of the things that she did throughout her term. I'd also like
to thank everyone who supported me and voted. I'd really like to thank my
family, I certainly couldn't have done it without their support, especially my
wife, Joan, who is here. I really appreciate everything you did, supporting me, I
certainly couldn't have done it without you. The reason I had so many votes is
because I have a lot of family out here as you can tell, and I really want to thank
all my family for aU their support and aU their efforts. I am really looking
forward to serving on the Council and working together to make Redwood City
better. Thank you very much."
Couneil Member Buehan said, "This past weekend I was thinking about almost
ten years of service on the City Council and I recognized that I missed one of the
major points of the whole thing. I realized that the terms winning and losing are
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 022 PAGE 12
