MIS: BUCHAN/HOWARD TO APPROVE THE MINUTES AS SUBMITTED
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 97-210
--------------______n______---------------------------_nn____-_---------------------------------------------
3. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY
A. Canvass of Returns of the November 4, 1997 Consolidated General Municipal
Election providing the names and total votes for the three newly elected Council
Members. Certified results are expected from the County Clerk on Wednesday,
November 12, 1997. The Resolution was completed and provided to Council
and the public on Friday, November 14, 1997; (205)
Mayor Hartnett said, "I have had the pleasure of serving with Council Member
La Berge for only three years, but I'm sure my experience has been typical of
those who have served with her for many years. Councilman Ruskin said the
other night that Council Member La Berge is a Council Member who has
distinguished herself in a number of respects, including serving as a Council
Member with grace, often under pressure. She has in her career on the Council
had to cast many difficult votes. She has distinguished herself not just on the
difficult votes but on those votes that matter to the quality of life for our citizens
day in and day out. She has served with great distinction as Mayor of Redwood
City and she has served not only with grace under pressure but with grace
among her colleagues. I think each of us would recall with great fondness how
she has cast her vote without concern about political consequence, without
concern whether or not she may affect someone's political sensibilities, but only
with great concern for the community. I had hoped that I would serve with
Council Member La Berge longer than three years, ... but she chose not to seek
reelection. Though there are many who can speak more eloquently than I about
her distinguished service, I simply wanted to open tonight's meeting with my
great appreciation for her example, for her service to every citizen in Redwood
City, and for her contributions to the quality oflife in Redwood City."
Mayor Hartnett read and presented a Proclamation to Couneil Member La
Berge thanking her for her outstanding service to the community and
acknowledging her promise to continue serving Redwood City as a member of
Redwood City Sister City International, the San Mateo County Historic
Museum Relocation to Redwood City Committee, Redwood City 2000,
supporting children and child care through the La Berge Child Care Foundation,
and other youth and education programs. The Proclamation also described
Council Member La Berge and her husband Warren Dale's fund raising and
relief efforts to the victims of war-torn Bosnia, and their special programs for
the children.
Couneilwoman La Berge received a standing ovation.
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 012 PAGE 2
