- - . "' -,
Warren Dale, Councilwoman La Berge's husband, described the efforts of one
- of Councilwoman La Berge's former campaign workers who told everyone to
vote for her because she "honchoed" Sequoia Station. Mr. Dale presented her
with a cap inscribed "Honcho" from some of the employees of Sequoia Station,
and said, "any time you feel lonely you can wear it around the house as the head
Honcho."
Mayor Hartnett gave Councilwoman La Berge a beautiful corsage, a
retirement plaque, and a gold chain with a Redwood City pendant from the City.
Viee Mayor Howard described how she met Councilwoman La Berge at a
Pride and Beautiful Committee clean-up twelve years ago, the Committee
Councilwoman La Berge established when she was Mayor. Vice Mayor
Howard said from that day she knew Councilwoman La Berge was a leader,
someone who worked with people, but never wanted the spotlight. Vice Mayor
Howard said, "Over the years Georgi has shown nothing but dignity and grace
in every event or opportunity that she has been involved with. I am so proud to
have been able to serve on the Council with Georgi." Vice Mayor Howard
described one example of Councilwoman La Berge's concern for others,
especially children. When she and Warren were married they asked that their
well wishers not give them wedding presents, but said if they wished, they could
make a donation to the La Berge Child Care Foundation which distributes funds
- to local child care centers.
Viee Mayor Howard presented two gifts to Councilwoman La Berge: a pair of
gold earrings from the Council, and a necklace and earring set from the
Redwood City International Sister City Committee.
Councilwoman La Berge said she loved jewelry and thanked everyone for the
beautiful gifts.
Couneilman Ruskin said, "I have had the honor of serving with Georgi only
for two years, but I know what a monumental contribution she has made to our
City. Some people, I think, cannot be replaced, others will come along and
make their own contributions. But I believe that Georgi is someone who has
made a unique contribution, and no one will ever quite match it. Week after
week she has come to Council meetings and used sound judgment, day after
day, time after time. Georgi enjoys, and rightly so, a reputation for integrity
that, after all is said and done, is probably the most important thing that a public
figure can have. She is also going to leave behind a legacy for building
community." Councilman Ruskin described how Georgi was instrumental in
creating understanding for the need to establish "broad relationships,
partnerships and alliances to support youth and families. Georgi was one of the
- people who began that effort, and it has begun to bear fruit, and will continue to
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 013 PAGE 3
