- - . Il .,
known each other longer than the two years I have been up here. You have
always struck me as a woman of great class. I don't mean to offend you, please,
- but you remind me of my mother... She was the first woman Mayor, and I think
you were number two. .. You share the same qualities of strength and quietness.
Well, you have those qualities. But there are a lot of things you share in
common, and I have always appreciated that, and respected you. I just want to
say thank you for your service to Redwood City, and thank you for the
friendship we've had."
Mayor Hartnett addressed Council Member La Berge and said how much he
and others had been impressed with her actions on the Council. "On those
occasions when you cast a vote of conscience... not in the majority, you stated
your position, you attempted to convince us of the logic of that position, but
most importantly as you cast that vote... every member of the Council and I
think every member of the public, knew that you were casting a vote for what
you, with all great dedication and honesty and fidelity, believed that it was for
the best of the community. As I call upon you to make your closing remarks, I
say to all present, Georgi La Berge has always done what she believed and knew
was for the best of the community. And who could ask for any greater legacy
than that."
Couneilwoman La Berge said, "Thank you Council Members for all of your
kind words. It is strange to be in this position right now, to have listened to all
- the comments regarding my work with you. I have to say, that I have loved
working with the Redwood City Council Members on behalf of the City of
Redwood City. As you might imagine, I feel tonight some sadness, but I also
feel a sense of relief that I don't have to go to Council meetings anymore! And
there are some things that I will never, ever have to do again. And I'll rejoice in
that. If I don't want to, I don't ever have to listen to a whiny citizen again.
(This tongue-in-cheek comment was followed by much laughter by the audience
and Council Members.) I have to tell you one of the things that I am so glad I
never have to do again is take part in labor negotiations. All in all, it has been
among one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life. I want to
thank all of you for making it so for me. First of all I want to thank the citizens
of this community who really made it fun for me to be a policy maker. And
thank my colleagues on the Council who were friends, and confidantes, who
were challenging people, who really, really gave me support, advice and were
willing to argue with me if need be. I also want to thank my supporting family."
Couneilwoman La Berge introduced her husband, Warren Dale, and her son
Pete La Berge, who stood and were applauded by the audience. Councilwoman
La Berge said, "I would like to congratulate the newly elected members of the
Council, Howard, Hartnett, and Ira. I would like to say a special word to you
Jeff. I hope that you realize what a wonderful gift you have been handed... to
- be a member of the City Council... It is a very precious thing.
