- - , ~ .,
imagine hundreds of children going to the San Mateo County Historical
Museum for weekly meetings at the court house where they will have
- opportunities to participate in things like reenactments of famous trials in San
Mateo History. Just imagine the theaters in Redwood City that will have young
people trained in theater arts to perform there, the Fox Theater, the Alhambra
theater, Carrington Hall and Canada College. Just imagine. Additional police
officers will be assigned to work with PAL, and to other projects for at-risk
youth. Just imagine. There will be in every large housing development in
Redwood City a child care center either in the development or adjacent to it.
And imagine. In Redwood Shores there will be children who will be able to
check out library books from the an electronic kiosk in Redwood Shores from
our main library and have them delivered there. And imagine. All of these
children in Redwood Shores playing on the fields and in the community center
that has just been completed. Imagine it. Believe in it and make it happen.
Thank you."
Councilwoman La Berge received a standing ovation.
Mayor Hartnett gave Councilwoman La Berge a hug.
Vice Mayor Howard said, Mayor Hartnett, "you have done such a good job as
our Mayor, in the role of leader, mediator and a dedicated public servant. Jim's
decisions are always honest. They are well thought out, and always fair. His
- vision for our community is a safe, beautiful and economically sound
community. These are the foundations of every decision that he makes. Despite
all the time he freely gives to the community he always placed his family as a
high priority, and managed to do it all within 24 hours. Those of you know him,
you know he never sleeps. You can reach him any time of the day or night by e-
mail. He will answer you within 10 minutes or so... We have the honor to
thank you for your two years serving as Mayor, and as our leader on the City
Council."
Vice Mayor Howard read and presented a Proclamation to outgoing Mayor
Hartnett thanking him for his leadership, and the sacrifices he and his family
had made the last two years. On behalf of the Council, Vice Mayor Howard
gave Mayor Hartnett a ten year old cigar to enjoy during a well-deserved rest
from Mayoral duties. He was also presented with a plaque set with the gavel he
had used during the last two years.
Couneilman Ruskin said, "I've had the privilege of serving with you the last
two years. I think you've done an outstanding job as Mayor, not only in the
way you've handled the meetings for us, but the way in which you've expressed
the consensus of the Council at times when it was difficult to imagine there was
one. And also the way in which you handled... the Executive Sessions, giving
- us the opportunity to work things through. I think you have done a really
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14,1997
MINUTES Page No. 017 PAGE 7
