terrific job as Mayor. You have really contributed to the well being of our City,
and I want to thank you."
Couneilman Claire said, "I have had the privilege of serving with eight
Mayors... They have all been eight great Mayors, in my opinion. All brought
something to the City that was different, a vitality to their Mayorship that was
different. Jim brought that to the City also. What a lot of you don't know is
that Jim has... helped in many negotiations behind the scenes, and spent his
personal time away from his own business, and (as an attorney) his personal
time is charged by the hour. He has taken time away from his own business in
service to our community and our City to participate in negotiations that most
Mayors would not do. He did an excellent job for the City in those negotiations.
He has helped warring parties find the right path, and has done a great deal of
good for our community that most citizens never know. . .. I will miss Jim as our
Mayor. He's been an excellent Mayor as all eight former Mayors have been.
Jim brings a special humor to the Council, and a special negotiation skills that I
find unique and have really appreciated over the last two years. And I want to
thank him for keeping me under control."
Couneilwoman La Berge said, "Jim, it's been a pleasure to serve with you, and
it is very nice to have you in my memory as the Mayor that I last served with. I
think you have handled the meetings extrernely well. One of the things that I
appreciated so much about you is, your sense of timing. It is absolutely
exquisite. Thank you."
Councilwoman Buehan said, "I speak for all of the people in the City
organization who uttered a sigh of absolute dismay the first day that Jim
Hartnett as Mayor got on the City e-mail system, because we were all
bombarded with e-mail continuously. I would expect now there will be a sigh
of relief. No, I do expect to keep corresponding with you through e-mail.
Thank you, you did a great job."
Couneilman Leipzig said, "Mr. Mayor. You lose the Mayorship, but don't lose
the humor. You'll need it for another four years. I'll tell you what a great guy
you were later on tonight when we share a cigar. But the audience is getting
restless."
Mayor Hartnett said he would have more to say later on after being sworn in,
but said, "I would simply like to express my great appreciation for my
colleagues for having given me the honor and the privilege of selecting me as
Mayor. It's been a great opportunity to work with you to make a difference in
the quality of life in our community almost every single day. To the extent I
was able to make a difference it was because you gave me the opportunity to do
so, and I will always remember that and appreciate that. I will always
appreciate the service, even more than before I became Mayor, of those who
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14,1997
MINUTES Page No. 018 PAGE 8
