advised that Assemblyman Lempert said he could not be of any help because CaITrans did
not listen to Assembly Members, but did listen to Governor Wilson. Council Member Ira
asked that an organized effort be made to contact the Governor and key Republican leaders
in the community. (205)
After Council discussion, Mayor Howard referred this matter to the Council Legislative
Committee whose members are Council Members Ira and Leipzig. Couneil Member
Hartnett suggested that adding the voices of the Chamber's newly formed Transportation
Committee might be helpful.
MEMO 12/19/97
E. Mayor Howard complimented Pat Webb, Economic Development Coordinator, Community
Development Director Nelson and staff for producing an insert sent to the community "to let
them know about the businesses that are located downtown, how to get there, who they are
and what they are doing, and please shop downtown." She said that in their enthusiasm some
of the new businesses "were omitted because we had an inventory of businesses that wasn't
kept up to date. Pat Webb and Deborah Nelson have gone to these businesses and spoken to
them and written letters. And advertising will be done to compensate for those businesses
that were omitted. That was a very entrepreneurial thing to do.... The merchants I spoke
with today are very excited about the prospect of working with City government and working
with their new Merchants Group. They had a meeting this evening and there is a lot of
enthusiasm in that group and a lot of positive energy. I think they are going to be very
successful."
