" ., -,

key to solving the problems in their cities. He added that Redwood City 2000 should
be a powerful contender for the "All American Cities Award."
- Councilman Ruskin requested a copy of Redwood City 2000's master list of major
activities throughout the City so the Council could see if anything was omitted and
what the Council could do to help. Coordinator Ross agreed to supply updated lists.
MEMO 2/8/97
Mayor Hartnett said Redwood City 2000 had made remarkable progress and had
obviously overcome the original reticence some people had that this group would just
prepare a report and nothing else, or just involve the usual community activists. He
said this had not been the case, and commended the members for their balanced
representation of the diversity of Redwood City, for actually doing things, and for
involving newly active members of the community. Mayor Hartnett said it was
important for everyone to know how far Redwood City 2000 is reaching into the
community and what a special opportunity it was providing for the Council to hear and
help people not normally heard by the Council He added that "Redwood City 2000
has gone far beyond my expectations in an extremely positive way."
Councilman Claire spoke in support of Redwood City 2000, and asked if
unincorporated areas of Redwood City were included. Greenalch said yes.
Councilman Claire said, given the problems Redwood City 2000 had in the beginning,
he still believed "Goals 200 I " was a better name.
-
Mayor Greenalch said the Council will have a very, very big role in Redwood City
2000 in terms of providing the leadership to implement the Vision. He said the project
approach will show people the value of small victories, and they will see "I made a
difference." In response to Council questions, Greenalch said the Town Hall meeting
was very important to Redwood City 2000, including changing the Vision statement.
2. Public comment
A. Pete Hughes, 18 Admiralty Court, Redwood City, member of Redwood City
2000 Community Action Team, described the nature of compromise that had
permeated the Committee, and said that this was the rust group he had served on
where different groups are speaking to each other for the rust time about common
problems facing Redwood City. He said he would not be a member of a
committee that was not committed to accomplishing positive changes.
Vice Mayor Howard, member of the Redwood City 2000 Coordinating Committee,
said it was important to get the message out to the community at large that "we need
your help. If you want to participate, we will find a place for you." She invited
everyone to participate in the City's Spring Clean-up, April 19, 1997.
-
ADJOURNED REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING FEBRUARY 8,1997
MINUTES MINUTE BOOK NO.55 PAGE 9
PagA No. 139
