He named it El Rancho del Rey, later changed to Rancho De
La Pulgas, which existed until 1850. Senor Arguello's wife was Dona Maria Angela
Arguello, whose bust is situated on Broadway. Mr. Acosta described the land donated by
Senora Arguello, five blocks of downtown Redwood City, including the land at Broadway
and Arguello. Mr. Mezes acted as the go-between for Senora Arguello and the State of
California. Mr. Acosta said Senora Arguello's total land donation was about 60,000 acres
donated on five different occasions.
Mr. Acosta said there was no time to organize a celebration for Cinco de Mayo, but they
would be pleased to hold the celebration on September 15, the day celebrated as the
Independence of Mexico.
Mr. Acosta thanked Senorita Centeno, Senor Jany, the Civic Cultural Commission, and
the Historic Resources Advisory Committee for their support.
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 APRIL 21,1997
MINUTES Page No. 262 PAGE 10
