ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
---
A. Ralph Garcia, 129 Poplar Avenue, Redwood City, member of the Optimist Club,
speaking for all the non-profits and service clubs who participated in the July 4th parade
and festival, said that the opportunity for food and drink vendors and others "selling their
wares, was originally designed for the non-profits to have a forum to raise money to do
what we do in the community". Mr. Garcia said everyone supported the right of vendors
along the parade route to operate during the parade and festival hours, but increasingly
some vendors were selling beer and sodas "out of the front door" undercutting the price of
the non-profits and service clubs. He reminded Council that selling "walk-away beer" was
illegal, but nothing has been done. Mr. Garcia said the decrease in soda sales this year will
reduce the Optimist's ability to help the children in Redwood City by $300, and the other
non-profits reported reduced drink sales as well. He suggested that Council review the
Mountain View ordinance that addresses this problem before non-profits decide it isn't
worth participating. (203)
B. Maria Diaz C-Vivian, 438 Cedar Street, Redwood City, expressed her objection to the
presence of the Confederate Flag in the 4th of July parade based on its current usage by
white hate groups displaying the swastika. She described her discussions with Marie
Davis and the NAACP and their similar objections. Mrs. C- Vivian said she had
distributed a flyer during the parade asking people to turn their backs when the
--- Confederate flag passed by out of respect for veterans who fought for the American Flag.
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 JULY 14, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 441 PAGE 4
