- - , . -
Councilman Leipzig said, "We could have the will to not fund the $5,000 from next year's
budget, we just do it. If it were a loan or whatever we want to call it. These are small
amounts of money, there is no question about it, but when you are talking about principle,
- and a process, it doesn't matter if it is $5,000, or $5 million. You stick with that principle
or that process."
Councilman Ruskin said "I regret that the Council did not see fit to approve the entire
amount, and I know there have been times when we have actually added to amounts taken
from the General Fund because they were small, but we felt they were significant. I will
vote for this. I appreciate Councilman Claire's 'no' vote as a matter of conscience I will
vote 'yes' for the same reason. Even though I really believe we should have done the
$10,000. $5,000 is better than nothing, and I will vote for that."
ITERATION OF THE MOTION:
MIS: LA BERGE/HOWARD GRANT THE CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION $5,000
FOR THE BUDGET YEAR 1997/98
MOTION CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYES: COUNCIL MEMBERS BUCHAN, HOWARD, LA BERGE, RUSKIN AND
MAYOR HARTNETT
NOES: COUNCIL MEMBERS CLAIRE AND LEIPZIG
MINUTE ORDER NO. 97-196
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST (203)
A. Councilman Ruskin and Mayor Hartnett thanked Matias Varela for attending and
expressing his support for the Civic Culture Commission.
B. Councilwoman La Berge announced a special program series sponsored by an offshoot of
Redwood City 2000. The first program of the series will be "How to Become a Change
Agent for Redwood City" which will train people "who are interested in seeing changes
being made in this community, and the process for doing so. It is really leadership
training." Councilwoman La Berge said they were especially interested in attracting
people who have not been involved in the community before, but who would like to learn
the process. The first program will be on Saturday, October 25, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
at the Red Morton Community Center. There is no charge to attend, and she encouraged
everyone to attend and invite their neighbors.
