. . , . .'
Council Member thinks that it is, I'd like to know because no Council Member has
addressed that issue to me." No one commented at this time. Mayor Hartnett said the
Council had already scheduled both the Police staffing study and the Joint Planning
- Session for meetings in October. (205)
MEMO 10/7/97
H. Councilman Claire said he had lunch with Jerry Fuchs of the Redwood City Tribune
(paid for through his personal funds, not the City's) and would characterize the Tribune's
editorials over the last 50 weeks as less than complimentary to Redwood City. He cited
two recent editorials concerning Council meetings, and said he called Mr. Fuchs to tell
him he was wrong, and out of curiosity asked how he got his ideas. Mr. Fuchs said he got
"information from Council Members, one in particular, and that he uses that in his
editorials. I would hope that Council Member does not really think that you or any of us
on the Council are intentionally delaying Council issues because of the upcoming election.
Jerry Fuchs seems to think that at least one Council Member does think that. Fact is...
you don't hold a meeting when you don't need a meeting. The meeting that was canceled,
and the one following that meeting, I don't think we should have had. It was a one item
agenda. .. It could have easily been postponed. The Police staffing study had to go to a
POA committee before it got to us, for their review." Councilman Claire said he didn't
think any Council Member called the POA and asked them to delay it. He said there is no
overt activity by the Council to try to delay issues "that might not be in the best interest of
certain individuals running for City Council. That's not the way we do business. We take
the business as it comes to us.... Take a look at the record." Councilman Claire said he
- would again call Mr. Fuchs in an attempt to set the record straight.
