. I II . , . .,
with the Christmas celebration and said the CCC wanted to expand that program this year.
She said this expanded program and the increased numbers of people and programs in
Redwood City, necessitated the Commission's request for additional funding. Chairwoman
- Ball said the Civic Cultural Commissioners had been very frugal, spent the money where it
would do the most good, and gave each request a lot of thought. They were not careless
with the money.
Chairwoman Ball had all the Civic Cultural Commissioners and their supporters to stand
up, and approximately ten people stood up to show their support.
Mayor Hartnett said the letter sent to the Council was very detailed.
In response to Councilman Leipzig's questions regarding the differences in the amount of
the request in the letter and the amount she requested this evening, Chairwoman Ball said
that the Commission had reviewed the figures again, and determined the amount needed
was $10,500, not the original $18,748. Councilman Leipzig said, "Well, we are making
progress."
Parks, Recreation and Community Services Superintendent Centeno explained that the
new amount reflects the Port's contribution for the Summer Concert Series ($4,000.)
Chairwoman Ball said two other items in the original list, the Children's Art Program and
the Kennedy Drama Program, had already been funded.
- Chairwoman Ball said the $10,500 request would be spent on the following: $5,000 for
the "Tis the Season" program; $2,000 for the Vintage Music Theatre; $1,000 for the
Redwood City 2000 Downtown Group; and $2,500 for contingencies. This new request
eliminates the balance of the funding originally set aside for Sister City Art Exhibit. The
CCC earlier provided $500 to the Sister City Program, but has not received any further
requests for funding.
In response to Vice Mayor Howard's questions, Chairwoman Ball described the John
Raitt Fund, and said part of the money raised at the Canada College fund raising event has
been set aside for Joe Marchi's use to produce another fund raiser.
In response to Councilwoman La Berge's questions, Chairwoman Ball said the CCC is
the catalyst for the "Tis the Season" Program. She described what the CCC has already
funded for the Program and said the requested $5,000 is needed for advertising, mailing
posters, promotion, etc., and she hoped those activities would not add up to $5,000.
Chairwoman Ball described the participation of the PCA, the Optimists Club, the schools
and the Vintage Music Theatre. Chairwoman Ball said the participants had been meeting
on a monthly basis since March and are extremely dedicated to this program.
Chairwoman Ball added that the requests from the Vintage Music Theatre and musical
instruments for schools have been tabled.
-
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 OCTOBER6,1997
MINUTES Page No. 553 PAGE 6
