5. SPECIAL ORDER(S) OF THE DAY <br /> A. Informational report to City Council on the Sequoia Station Project <br /> SAFE Program <br /> The Mayor introduced Chief JR Gamez who presented the informational report. The <br /> Chief presented a video (on file) and shared details about this most successful program. <br /> He elaborated on the various steps and incremental program leading to the <br /> implementation of the program and how important this change has been for local <br /> businesses and their customers. He also noted the programmatic changes and what <br /> the project will be doing in the future. <br /> One Council Member asked if there has been some spill over. The Chief explained yes <br /> that happens occasionally and the approach is the same which is to pair the individuals <br /> with the correct human services. Other Council Members thanked the Chief and the <br /> Police Department for taking a lead on this and showing the community that this can be <br /> done. The Chief said that his command staff worked tirelessly with all the stakeholders <br /> and he is grateful for the great team he has. <br /> One Council Member noted that his entire command staff was present. She <br /> appreciates his approach to all community related issues such as the "Coffee with the <br /> Cops." She complimented the Chief on all his accomplishments. Another Council <br /> Member thanked the Chief for his commitment and his dedication to this cause. He <br /> acknowledged this is a very delicate thing. Vice Mayor Gee noted that community <br /> policing takes everybody working together and making it happen. Mayor Aguirre <br /> appreciated the presentation. The Chief explained that bringing in the stakeholders and <br /> making them part of the solution makes programs such as this one sustainable. <br /> B. Redwood City YMCA Update - Christopher Beth, Parks, Recreation, and <br /> Community Services Director and Julie Wesolek, Executive Director of the <br /> YMCA of Silicon Valley <br /> Mr. Beth gave an update on the partnership and the progress made so far and a review <br /> of next steps to building and operating the recreational facility. He gave an overview of <br /> the timeline of study for the project and the benefits that are recognized from the <br /> partnership. Ms. Wesolek spoke about the vision, goals and objectives to bring multiple <br /> generations under one roof. She noted the importance of volunteerism for the <br /> community. <br /> One Council Member said this is an example of a perfect partnership. He noted that the <br /> key is intergenerational and this is an opportunity to link generations. One Council <br /> Member spoke about models available and Ms Wesolek and Mr. Beth clarified that <br /> there are various models. The Vice Mayor suggested talking with Canada College <br /> about a triple partnership with Canada, the City and the YMCA for a possible 50-meter <br /> pool.
