Public Comment Barbara Valley, a resident, commented on what a past speaker, Janet Borgens, said at the City Council meeting of October 21, 2013 and how the Council reacted. She stated that those displaced by the fire were disappointed that Council members were not at the community meetings and were not asking for Council Member presence at the fire itself. She asked for an apology to Ms. Borgens. Janely Valverde, a student at Sequoia High School and member of YO! Mateo, spoke about Project Casa. The project creates access to smoke-free housing and is a part of the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition. Francisco Sajuan, a member of YO! Mateo, a youth leadership coalition, a health advocate and Canada College student, spoke about his work in the community which encourages students to be a healthy part of the community. He spoke about his concern about living in an environment that is not smoke-free and the need to create positive change. Mario Vasquez, a member of YO! Mateo, a youth leadership coalition, a resident, father, student, and youth advocate, spoke about the dangers of second hand smoke. He spoke in favor of passing an ordinance similar to ones in the cities of Belmont and Daly City to ban smoking. Christian Finao, a member of YO! Mateo, a youth leadership coalition, youth advocate, and student, spoke about Project Casa. He spoke about meeting with landlords and the community about the potential health benefits and reduced insurance costs. He said they want to meet individually with Council for further discussion. Anthony Heimuli, a member of YO! Mateo, a youth leadership coalition, spoke about the young people who are part of the organization and part of the community. He said they see the effects of second-hand smoking and there is a need to take time to connect further with Council on creating smoke-free housing. Sandy Orozco, Erika Mendoza, and Ana Becerra, high school students in the community, spoke together about Keystone of the Boys and Girls club of Redwood City in providing career exploration, bringing the community together, and the need for more improvement in certain areas, such as security. James Lee Han said he is a current candidate for City Council and thanked the Council for supporting AB 1229, which was ultimately vetoed by the Governor. He stated that the City could do other things to support affordable housing in Redwood City. He noted what the City of San Mateo has done for affordable housing as an example of what Redwood City could do. He agreed with comments by an earlier speaker and opined that the two community meetings he had recently attended, did not seem to have enough public notice.
