Councilman Ruskin said he did not want to slow down the process, but asked his
colleagues to consider the following suggestions:
. Replace the word Broadway with the word Downtown on the top of the clock
tower;
. Install more effective signs pointing to the Downtown at the corner of Arguello
and Broadway;
. Replace the words Redwood City with the words Downtown/Broadway on the
archway sign at the railroad tracks on Broadway.
Councilwoman Buchan thanked Councilman Ruskin for his serious consideration of the
entry features program and advised that the original decisions were made through public
forums. She added that she did not think it was the best course of action to begin that
process all over again, and suggested that the Council approve the program and move
forward.
Councilwoman La Berge expressed concerns that the current sign program would not be
as effective as the Council had wanted. She stated there were many signs pointing to
Broadway, but not enough pointing out the Downtown area.
Vice Mayor Howard said she often took the train and she was looking forward to the
installation of the archway sign which might be the only part of Redwood City commuters
will remember. Vice Mayor Howard said the merchants had asked for landmarks they
could be proud of, and she believed the proposed entry features program as proposed fits
that bill.
Mayor Hartnett agreed with Vice Mayor Howard that the actual words were less
important than the landmarks themselves and he said he liked the emphasis on Broadway.
Mayor Hartnett thanked Councilman Ruskin for his serious considerations and suggestions
regarding this program, and agreed with his colleagues that the signs were very important
and needed Council oversight. Mayor Hartnett said he agreed with Councilman Leipzig
that the entry features program would not be finished until the downtown sidewalks
improvement project was finished.
1) MIS: LEIPZIGIHOW ARD TO APPROVE TASK ORDER FOR POST BID
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FOR PHASE IV OF HAMILTON STREET
IMPROVEMENTS AND DOWNTOWN ENTRY FEATURES PROGRAM (FREEDMAN,
TUNG AND BOITOMLEY)
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS ROLL CALL VOTE:
MINUTE ORDER NO. 96-044
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 100
Regular Meeting Minutes
February 26,1996
Page 12
