. - . - -
the teenagers would be given good publicity. Trustee Stuart asked that the Redwood City
Family Center be included in the process. She asked where the funding was to come ITom and
'--- what accountability measures were in place.
Coordinator Ross said that currently Redwood City, the County and each of the School
Boards contributed $14,000 each to the Redwood City 2000 effort for staff support and
administration. Additional funds have been advanced by the United Way and there are
currently ongoing discussions with the Peninsula Community Foundation regarding fees in the
support of project facilitation. Coordinator Ross said that "you can leverage resources
appropriately when you work together. The best example ofthat....is the Sequoia High School
Career to Work Program."
Councilman Claire said the Sequoia High School District is a multi-jurisdictional district, and
at least three of the high schools in the District are receiving children ITom the Redwood City
Elementary School District as well as children ITom the "greater Redwood City sphere of
influence." Councilman Claire said "we do share a lot of the same problems." He said it was
"extremely important that the Sequoia High School District playa role in Redwood City 2000.
A large percentage of your children come ITom this area and working together, we can make
things better for the District and for the City and for the community as a whole." Councilman
Claire, long time member of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee, said Redwood City
had a history of funding agencies that do good work in the community and he had always
wondered why they didn't work together towards their common goals. He said Redwood City
2000 was about bringing lots of agencies together to provide services for the betterment of the
'--- entire community.
Councilwoman Buchan said it was very important to have heard tonight's in-depth
presentation. She expressed concerns about a large group, but said she trusted the comments
made tonight would be acknowledged and addressed by the Coordinating Committee. She
thanked Bonnie Miller, Ed Bailey, Caroline Currie and the whole community for their long and
successful efforts that really turned around the Friendly Acres neighborhood. Councilwoman
Buchan thanked David Stuart for taking time to listen to both sides and thanked him for what
he had to say.
Mayor Hartnett said Redwood City 2000's goals as stated earlier were education, economic
development, public safety and health care. He said that although health care was not a
traditional area of City involvement, the other three goals just happen to be three priorities the
Council had already established to concentrate on over the next few years. The Council looked
at the community and felt that despite the diversity of views and backgrounds among the seven
members, agreed upon the above priorities. Mayor Hartnett said the Council understood the
City could not do it alone, and the School Districts could not either. Redwood City 2000
provides an opportunity to get more bang for the buck in the community, and to work better
together where there are common interests. Mayor Hartnett said that although he was
comfortable with the stated outcome, he was not totally comfortable with the process yet He
'--- said a majority of the participation group needs to be clearly from the policy makers or their
representatives, and he did not believe a floating membership would be appropriate.
