At the invitation of the Mayor and Board Presidents, San Mateo County Board of
Supervisors President Ruben Barrales facilitated the discussion among the members of the
Council and both Boards. President Barrales noted that Bonnie Miller, who had spoken
earlier, was a recent Sequoia award winner for her volunteer work, and Jennie Corral, Senior
at Castilleja School, who was in the audience, was a recent Sequoia award winner as a high
school student, both exemplifYing the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism in the Redwood
City community.
In response to Trustee Seiling's questions, Coordinator Ross said each Board and Council
member would select one person or attend the Committee meetings, a total of 24 people.
Trustee Seiling said the Brown Act requirements would apply to the meetings. President
Scott said that neighbors were hard pressed to support programs they had not participated in
shaping. She urged the Committee to talk to neighbors and find ways to have them move into
the process. President Scott said the Board had to think of all the schools and cities in their
District, not just Redwood City.
In response to Councilman Ruskin's questions, Coordinator Ross advised that everyone is
welcome to participate in the process, and the remaining 21 or so members of the Committee
would be managed by the Redwood City 2000 Coordinating Committee. She suggested a task force of teen-
agers be put together to help the team work through the process, and she expressed hope that
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54 Special Joint Council Meeting Minutes
Page No. 130 March 18, 1996
Page 9
