'I I I I .

goals through cooperation and mutual respect. Pastor Logie offered the use of their
facilities and lots of volunteers to help Redwood City 2000, plus their prayers.
'--
Mayor Hartnett asked if anyone else wished to speak.
G. Karl Dresden, Redwood City, said he had been asked to speak tonight because he had an
area of knowledge that related to this area. Mr. Dresden said the video shown earlier
lacked substantive facts of what the guidelines, rules and results would be, other than
buzz words such as "share ideas" or "healthy start, "community", and "efficiency." Mr.
Dresden said that this idea came ITom Washington and he didn't believe that money came
ITom Washington without strings attached. Mr. Dresden suggested that the process move
forward utilizing volunteer resources, such as the church facilities, without government
funding. He said that more government funding did not guarantee a better result in the
community. Mr. Dresden said this program was related to the federal program, Goals
2000, because of "funding ITom the government for certain key results."
H. Bonnie Miller, Co-Chair of the Friendly Acres Neighborhood Association, described
Healthy Start in her neighborhood and said how lucky they were to have the program
even though it took over three years to get it there. She said it was important to keep the
program growing and said how much she wanted to see it established in other schools.
Chairperson Miller said Redwood City 2000 reflects everyone's goals and she implored
the Council and School Boards to support it, to make a difference in the community.
'--- 1. Rich Schouboe, Redwood City, described his family and his 7-year old's participation in
the Spanish Immersion Program. He said he felt by sharing each others cultures, we
became a better community. Mr. Schouboe said that Redwood City 2000 sounded like a
good idea to him or it could become a bureaucracy, but in any case he felt that "we need
to have a community that works together....to deal with our issues, and listen to each
other."
J. Walter Hogue, manager of a trailer park, related an incident where with a few resources,
good ideas and people who wanted to help, he and others ITom a company he did
promotional work for, created the Amazing Kids Crafts Extravaganza at the San Mateo
County Expo Center two weeks ago.
-------------______n______------______n_---------------------------------------------------------______n_____----------
7. DISCUSSION OF MEMBERS OF THE JOINT MEETING
Mayor Hartnett advised that the Redwood City Council had previously approved Redwood
City 2000 in concept, and approved shifting the funding ITom South County Coalition Against
Drug Abuse to enable Redwood City to contribute its fair share towards the cost of the
coordinated activity of Redwood City 2000. The Council also approved a contract that allowed
the administrative side to be coordinated through one agency.
'--- MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 129
Special Joint Council Meeting Minutes
March 18, 1996
Page 8
