MIS: BUCHAN/CLAIRE TO APPROVE THE STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS
AND ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS AS FOLLOWS:
1) Delete the Wilson Street Detour.
2) Ask the SMCTA for the additional $980,000 with the argument that there are other
grade separation projects within the Peninsula which are underfunded and that the
Board has committed additional funds for these overruns. The $980,000 is based on
deletion of the Wilson Street detour, a City contribution of $334,000 for the traffic
signal work along Maple Street and on $100,000 for soil remediation. The latter two
projects are already appropriated in the 95/96 C.1.P. Previously other cities have been
successful in obtaining additional funding with support of their City Council.
3) Proceed with completing the current design. BKF has reviewed the various
alternatives in reducing the cost, including significantly redesigning the bridge and
retaining walls but they do not believe there are any major cost savings that can be
done that would retain the aesthetics of the bridge. The cost of the redesign might be
equal to any potential cost savings.
4) That staff work closely with BKF and the railroad in resolving any other cost or
design issues and agree to the "final" cost of construction. A summary of the final
cost is shown in Attachment 2.
5) Vice Mayor Howard added two further recommendations: increasing the use of
pile driving to save money and involving the merchants in the promotion of the
detour.
MOTION CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE OF COUNCIL MEMBERS
PRESENT.
MEMO 3/19/96
----------______n______-------------------------------------------------------------------------_--___n_____------------
5.
