ORIGINAL <br /> <br /> R£SOLUTION NO. 13052 4/21/97 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION ENDORSING PRESERVATION OF BAIR <br /> ISLAND AS OPEN SPACE AND WILDLIFE HABITAT <br /> WITH APPROPRIATE PUBLIC ACCESS AND PROVISION <br /> FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY REQUIREMENTS <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Bair Island comprises over 3,000 acres, most of which <br />currently serves as a wildlife habitat and open space area fronting on San <br />Francisco Bay and its tributaries in the City of Redwood City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Peninsula Open Space District (uPOS'I'") has <br />announced its agreement to purchase 1626 acres of the privately owned <br />portion of Bair Island (sometimes referred to as uSouth Shores") with the <br />intention of conveying the property to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service <br />for inclusion in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife <br />Refuge; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, POST's plan for conveying title of Bair Island to the <br />federal government includes retuming portions of the property to tidal <br />action and preservation of its open space and wildlife habitat areas, with <br />provision for public access for observation of the bayland in its natural <br />state; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, preservation of Bair Island in its natural state should <br />include provision for compatible recreational uses, accommodation of <br />vehicular access and connection between communities in the vicinity of <br />Bair Island and the Bay, including the Redwood Shores area of the City of <br /> <br /> Reso-171 1 <br /> F;/Shared/Redwood/Council <br /> DES:djk <br /> 04/17/97R <br /> 04/21/97R <br /> <br /> <br />
