<br />02/23/2009 <br /> <br />ORIGINAL <br /> <br />ORDINANCE NO. 2338 <br /> <br />ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 25.2.02 (L) OF CHAPTER 25, <br />ARTICLE I. PARKS OF THE REDWOOD CITY MUNICIPAL CODE <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> Chapter 25, Article I. Sec. 25.2.02 (L) of the Redwood City Municipal <br />Code restricts but does not prohibit smoking in City parks; and <br />WHEREAS, <br /> the United States Surgeon General’s 2006 Report on the Health <br />Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke has concluded the following: <br />? <br /> Millions of Americans, both children and adults, are exposed to secondhand <br />smoke in their homes and workplaces despite substantial progress in tobacco <br />control; <br />? <br /> Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in <br />children and adults who do not smoke; <br />? <br /> Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for sudden <br />infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and <br />more severe asthma; <br />? <br /> Exposure of adults to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on <br />the cardiovascular system and causes coronary heart disease and lung <br />cancer; <br />? <br /> Scientific evidence indicates that there is no risk-free level of exposure to <br />secondhand smoke; and <br />WHEREAS, <br /> secondhand smoke has been classified as a “toxic air contaminant” <br />by the California Air Resources Board; and <br />ATTY/ORD/ORD.312 1 2338 <br />012009 FORMERLY MUFF # 305 <br /> <br /> <br />
