REV: 05-28-26 MI
Corporate Partner Onboarding Letter
Dear City of Redwood City ,
Thank you for joining with Year Up United in enabling young adults to move from minimum
wage to meaningful careers in just one year. Year Up United asks each Internship partner to
sign a brief partner agreement (attached). The agreement is designed to be simple, short and
straightforward. It provides the basic key terms relevant to both partners (Year Up United and
the Internship Partner). It focuses on the core element of our joint effort: to provide valuable
educational experiences for our participating young adult/students. By design, it does not
include typical vendor and/or staffing agency type language because this is not a
typical vendor relationship and we are not entering into a staffing arrangement.
This component of the Year Up United program will provide a meaningful “next
stage” to the student’s education experience. Instead, the agreement sets out the
obligations that Year Up United and the Internship Partner have to the students. To provide
context for this agreement, what follows is a short description of Year Up United’s program
(first component is Learning and Development (L&D) and second component is the Internship)
and the important role of the Internship Partners.
The Intern program is an integral part of the Year Up United educational experience. Year Up
United students receive an educational stipend both during their classroom training at Year Up
United and during their Internship at your organization. During the classroom phase, the
students learn useful technical and professional skills. During the Internship, those skills are
enriched by the training, supervision, and mentoring you will provide, augmented by
continuing support from Year Up United. Interns take college level courses throughout the
program. The students are not employees either of Year Up United or of your organization. Your
organization and the Interns understand that you are not their employer, that you will not offer
them benefits, that you will not pay them any wages, and that you have no obligation to hire
them when their Internship is done. You will provide the Interns with training and supervision
comparable to what they would receive in an educational environment. It is expected that the
Interns will not displace any of your regular employees. Instead, the Interns should work under
the supervision of your existing staff. The Internship is for the benefit of the student, and it is
expected that you will not derive any immediate benefits from the Internship. However, you will
have the option (but not the obligation) to hire any of the trained and highly motivated
graduates at the end of the Internship program, without paying any placement fees.
If you have any questions about the terms of the partner agreement, please contact Lisa Boyars
Jackson .
ATTY/AGR.2026.132/Year Up United (Internship Agreement FY 26-27) (Page 1 of 5)
