REGULAR MEETING OF THE PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION

Wednesday, November 4, 1964 - Veterans Memorial Bldg.

The meeting was called to order by Cþairman James Knecht at 8:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Chairman James Knecht, Alyn Beals, Robert Whitmore, Doris
Thompson, Louise Tornell, Jack Stuart, Park Superintendent Pasco Balz-
arini, Recreation Director Alfred Morton, City Manager James Neal, City
Councilman William Royer, Mrs. R. McCullough of the Hoover School P.T.A.
and Mrs. Carol of the Fair Oaks P.T.A. and Arthur Eskelin, Traffic
Engineer.

MSC by Commissioners Thompson and Tornell that the minutes be approved
as mailed with the following exceptions: Spelling of the name Shewry
and Stuart were corrected.

Art Eskelin, Traffic Enginner for the City of Redwood City, spoke on
the re-routing of Va Iota Road since the Park and Recreation Commission
along with Councilman Floyd Granger preferred another location rather
than the ones previously presented. The new location would swing through
the park and make it necessary to remove the rectangular shaped house on
the east~side of Valota Road thence through the Park Dèpartment Corpora-
tion Yard passing the west side entry of the Veterans Memorial Building
and would provide approximately 40 parking places for cars.

Commissioner Jack stuart was concerned that the city keep as much land
as possible adjacent to this roadway if the city' is going to condemn
any of the land.

MSC by Commissioners Thompson and Tornell that the Park and Recreation
Commission recommend that we accept the new route of Valota Road-St.
Francis road otherwise known as alternate #3 as presented by Traffic
Engineer Art Eskelin.

A report on the Baird Property was made by City Manager James Neal and
he stated that the staff concurs with the Park Superintendent Pasco
Balzarini and recommend 'that we investigate the possibility of acquir-
ing a portion of the Armory property. If we are unable to obtain this
property for a park auxiliary yard to replace the present fa cilities
which will be demolished due to the re-routing of Valota Road.

A report on the Friendly Acre~ Project was made by Councilman william
Royer wherein he stated that>in.his letter to Superintendent of Elemen-
tary Schools Andrew Spinas, he requested that consideration be given
to the construction of a swimming pool at the Hoover School area. Coun-
cilman- Royer felt that there is a definite need for both the building
and swimming pool in this area, but since at the present time we can-
not justify a building in the Taft School area and we must do something
now, it was his recommendation along with the Recreation Director that

we ~ould proceed with the swi~ng pool at ~over School.
