The minutes should read that the meeting was adjourned in memory
of Beryl Darnell. The minutes were approved as corrected.

CORRESPONDENCE

-All Commissioners were given a copy of a memo from Park Supervisor Jim
Littlefield regarding the ash white fly project' which has been in mentioned
in local papers recently.

-All Commissioners were given a final copy of the Request for Proposal for
Union Cemetery for their review. The Commissioners should get back to
Director Griffiths with any additional comments/suggestions as soon as
possible. '

ITEM 1 - Dogs in the Parks - Joy Lovinger

Redwood Shores resident Joy Lovinger spoke to the Commission regarding a
lack of space in Redwood Shores to walk her dog. She recently received a
citation at Shorebird Park for walking her dog, which ;s against a Redwood
City ordinance. She had spoken to Director Griffiths regarding this
problem and understands that should the parks allow dogs, it would be very
costly to re-sign all the parks. Ms. Lovinger suggested that only certain
parks be designated for dogs and also that a fine should be imposed on
those persons not picking up after their dogs. She suggested that perhaps
Mariner Park be designated to allow dogs on a trial basis. Garbage
can/recepticles would have to be installed in the park for dog refuse.
Commissioner Hardness was concerned with the City's liability regarding
dogs in the parks (e.g. dogs biting citizens). Director Griffiths said
that many years ago when dogs were allowed in parks" they had to be on a
leash. Many complaints were received regarding dogs in the parks and
eventually the ordinance was changed prohibiting dogs in the parks. There
;s a health problem having dogs in the parks because of the children's play
areas.
