The four sites considered were a site on
the Hetch Hetchy, an area below the sandlot at Stulsaft Park, the east end
corner of Mezes Park and the levee area at Mariner Park. Because of
financial constraints, the site on the Hetch Hetchy was selected for a 6
month trial period. This particular site is at the intersection of Fernside
Street and Massachusetts Avenue and Mr. Aguilar estimated it would cost
approximately $715.00 in labor and materials to develop. He said he has
spoken to the San Francisco Water Department and they have verbally approved
the proposal, but a letter would have to be sent to formally request use of
the site. After they receive our request, they will analyze it and determine
some additional costs to be assessed for use of the land. Director Griffiths
said that normally the San Francisco Water Department will charge the City
50% of the tax value of the property. Mr. Aguilar indicated the only
stipulation enforced by the San Francisco Department would be no digging or
planting on the site to prevent any underground pipes from being damaged.

Mr. Aguilar stated the site is open on 3 of its 4 sides and 4th side is
fenced. He explained that by selecting this site over other park sites in
Redwood City, the Department avoids the cost of having to replace signs in
all City parks reflecting the creation of the trail dog exercise area, which
could cost up to an additional $5,000 over and beyond the labor, materials,
and property rental costs already noted.

Commissioners Swope and Davis asked about the neighbors surrounding this site
and how they would be notified of this project. Commissioner Swope noted the

e

~

e
