She explained the facility began as a partnership in 1982 <br />with the City of Redwood City and the Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br />Advisory Council. The Veterans Memorial Senior Center is a multi-service <br />facility and provides many services to seniors including a nutrition program, <br />bingo, adaptive physical education, wellness and fitness programs, computer <br />program and transportation programs. Manager Griffith explained what <br />happens in a "typical day" at the Center and spoke about the wide age range <br />of seniors served at the Center. She also noted that a new Accessible <br />Recreation Program supervisor should be on board by September. She <br />announced the Center also has a very active volunteer program of 420 <br />volunteers which increased from 160 volunteers in 1994. She also stated <br />that the Center provided the following on a monthly basis: an average of <br />12,000 to 15,000 visits; 1,800 nutrition meals and 350 in-home meals; 382 <br />rides to and from the facility by City van; has 15 computers in the computer <br />lab which is run completely by 17 volunteers. <br /> <br />Vice Chairperson Walsh noted he has been a volunteer with the SASH <br />program which provides shopping for home-bound seniors. He thanked <br />Manager Griffith and her staff for providing such an important service to the <br />senior community. Manager Griffith noted that staff is working with Kaiser to <br />provide a shuttle program for seniors. She invited the Commissioners to <br />come to lunch at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. <br /> <br />
