<br />PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br /> <br />MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2005 <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Yapp, Commissioners Joseph, <br />Slusser, Swope, Truscelli and White <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Vice Chairperson Morton <br /> <br />GUESTS PRESENT: Senior Civil Engineer Peter Vorametsanti <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Director Corinne Centeno, Superintendents Gary Hover <br />and Chris Beth, Youth & Teen Manager Adilah Haqq, Administrative Assistant <br />Denise Monroe <br /> <br />Chairperson Yapp called the regular meeting of the Park and Recreation <br />Commission to order at 7:30pm in Room 1 of the Community Activities <br />Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />The minutes of the September 28 meeting were approved as mailed. <br /> <br />CORRESPONDENCE <br /> <br />There was no correspondence. <br /> <br />ITEM 1 – PRESENTATION BY YOUTH & TEEN MANAGER ADILAH HAQQ <br /> <br />Youth & Teen Manager Adilah Haqq spoke about a few of the many programs <br />that the Youth & Teen Unit provides to ages pre-school to high school. She <br />stated that her staff operates programs such as: After School sites at eight <br />Redwood City schools, Little Learners Pre-School, Youth Advisory Board, and <br />Teen Advisory Board. The After School Programs provide a safe and <br />nurturing environment for 900 children each day and noted that there are <br />200 children on the waiting list. These programs are also designed to help <br />students improve their test scores, social skills and behavior skills. Teacher <br />to student ratio is 1 to 12. <br /> <br />Manager Haqq explained that the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) consists of <br />students in grades 6-8 and that there are currently 11 members on the <br />board. The YAB participates in many activities including community service <br />activities. The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) consists of students in grades 9- <br />12 and has 13 members on its board. The TAB has a teen website linked <br />with the City’s website; is working with “One Voice for Youth” which is a <br />consortium of youth community groups; and on a community garden project. <br /> <br /> <br />
