0 R I G I N A L 1/11/99 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 13540 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION EXPRESSING CONCERN REGARDING <br /> ABRUPT TERMINATION OF SERVICE BY MAJOR <br /> MANAGED HEALTH CARE INSURANCE PROVIDER AND <br /> URGING APPROPRIATE LEGISLATIVE PROTECTION <br /> FROM DESTRUCTIVE ECONOMIC PRACTICES IN THE <br /> HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Redwood City Senior Affairs Commission has informed <br />this Council of the cancellation by a major managed health care insurer of its <br />contract with the Sequoia Medical Clinic in the City of Redwood City, California; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council shares the Commission's concern regarding <br />the hardships imposed upon individuals insured by the heath care insurer's <br />abrupt action, particularly senior citizens with limited resources; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, many local seniors were, on short notice, required either to <br />select another primary physician or another insurance provider; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, those who chose to retain their current insurance carrier were <br />generally referred to healthcare providers outside Redwood City, and generally <br />were afforded less than 60 days within which to enroll with a new provider; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, local seniors currently receiving treatment for serious <br />illnesses were most vulnerable to these changes; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this Council recognizes that the foregoing occurrences <br />represents but one example of the chaotic and unbridled competitive forces <br />affecting the health care industry nationwide; and <br /> <br /> 1 <br />Reso-568 <br />DES:djk:rg <br />G:/Shared/Redwood/Council <br />01/07/99, 01/12/99R <br /> <br /> <br />
