Learn why this isimportant
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
I am writing to express my strong support for Alternative B of the Jefferson Avenue Traffic
Safety Improvement Project.
Alternative B aligns with the Downtown Precise Plan’s vision of creating safe, low-stress
routes that encourage people to walk and bike into downtown Redwood City from nearby
neighborhoods and improves pedestrian connectivity across Jefferson Ave to access nearby
parks and schools.
Please note while Alternative B provides improved bicycle routes along Jefferson Avenue
between Alameda de las Pulgas and King Street, it reverts to sharrows east of King Street and
would force bicyclists abruptly into four lanes of complex traffic to reach El Camino and
downtown. This creates a clear gap in safe route continuity along Jefferson Avenue into
downtown. If full continuity on Jefferson is not feasible, I urge Council to direct investment in
a parallel protected bike route, such as on James Avenue, with a safe, signalized crossing at El
Camino.
This project represents an important opportunity to strengthen safe pedestrian connections to
downtown, area schools, and nearby parks and to build on the vision of the Downtown Precise
Plan. As Council Members Chu and Sturken noted on January 12, incorporating low-stress
bike routes on Jefferson, Brewster, and Maple is essential.
Thank you for your consideration. I urge you to move forward with Alternative B.
Sincerely,
Elise DeBuysser
