ATTY/RESO.0023/CC RESO FIFA WORLD CUP 26 FLAG <br />REV: 05-07-26 VR <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 16402 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD <br />CITY AUTHORIZING THE RAISING AND DISPLAY OF THE FIFA <br />WORLD CUP 26TM FLAG AS PART OF THE MAY 12, 2026, REGIONAL <br />FLAG RAISING EVENT AND FOR THE DURATION OF FIFA WORLD <br />CUP 26TM <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City has adopted Administrative Policy No. 53 <br />(the Flag Policy) that standardizes the manner in which the Flag of the United States of <br />America, the Flag of the State of California, and other flags are to be displayed at City of <br />Redwood City facilities; and <br />WHEREAS, the Flag Policy authorizes the display of flags other than the Flag of <br />the United States of America, the Flag of the State of California or other governmental <br />flag (Non-Governmental Flags) upon approval by the City Council of the City of Redwood <br />City (the City Council) by adoption of a resolution; and <br />WHEREAS, the adoption of a resolution authorizing the display of a Non- <br />Governmental Flag is an expression of the City Council’s official sentiments; and <br />WHEREAS, a resolution authorizing the display of a Non-Governmental flag may <br />be adopted in conjunction with official actions, ceremonial items, or proclamations of the <br />City Council; and <br />WHEREAS, FIFA World Cup 26™ will bring together nations, cultures, and <br />communities from around the world in a global celebration of sport, unity, and international <br />friendship coinciding with our nation’s 250th anniversary; and <br />WHEREAS, soccer plays an important role in bringing together Redwood City <br />residents of all backgrounds and generations, including the many local youth who <br />participate in recreational and community soccer programs; and <br />WHEREAS, Redwood City has a long tradition of welcoming residents and visitors <br />of all backgrounds and celebrating events that strengthen community connection and <br />civic engagement; and <br />WHEREAS, the Bay Area Host Committee is organizing a Regional Flag Raising <br />on May 12, 2026, to commemorate “30 Days to Kickoff” of FIFA World Cup 26™, with <br />events to take place in Santa Clara, San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland, and would <br />like to have an event in the Peninsula and specifically in Redwood City; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council’s official sentiment is that Redwood City has an <br />important role to play in the Peninsula as a community hub and event space for <br />celebrating diversity, inclusion, and the unifying power of sport across cultures and <br />generation, due to Courthouse Square events programming, Redwood City’s status as
