6/28/99 <br /> ORIGINAL <br /> <br /> ORDINANCE NO. 2161 <br /> <br /> ORDINANCE REPEALING ARTICLE II, CHAPTER 3 OF THE CODE OF <br /> THE CITY OF REDWOOD RELATING TO SIGNS AND ADDING ARTICLE <br /> II, CHAPTER 3 TO THE CODE OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br /> RELATING TO SIGNS <br /> <br /> Section 1. Article II ("Signs") of Chapter 3 of the Code of the City of Redwood <br />City is hereby repealed. <br /> <br /> Section 2. Article II ("Signs") is hereby added to Chapter 3 of the Code of the <br />City of Redwood City to read as follows: <br /> <br /> "ARTICLE II <br /> SIGNS <br /> <br /> DIVISION 1. GENERAL <br /> <br />Section 3.59. Purpose. Redwood City has a reputation as a community of natural <br />beauty, distinct architecture and historic tradition. Signs significantly affect the <br />aesthetic appeal of streetscapes and the quality of the visual environment and influence <br />perceptions of local economic conditions. The purpose of this Article is to ensure that <br />information by signs is presented safely and effectively in a manner which enhances <br />the quality of the visual environment, aids in attracting shoppers and other visitors and <br />promotes traffic safety and convenient circulation for motorists, bicyclists, and <br />pedestrians. The provisions of this Article are enacted in furtherance of the public <br />health, welfare, and safety. <br /> <br />Section 3.60. Ob|ectives. The objectives of this Article are to: <br /> <br /> a. Implement the goals and policies of the Redwood City General Plan by <br /> establishing uniform standards and procedures to control the size, type, number, <br /> design, placement, illumination and maintenance of signs; <br /> <br /> b. Encourage signs that are attractive and functional for the type of business to <br /> which they pertain; and that are in scale and architectural harmony with adjacent <br /> buildings and development in the commercial district or neighborhood in which <br /> they are located; <br /> <br /> c. Discourage signs that contribute to the visual clutter of streetscapes such as off- <br /> site signs, oversized signs, roof signs, animated signs and electronic <br /> readerboard signs; <br /> <br />shared/shared/Council/Oral <br />Signordl 6/7/99r <br /> 1 <br /> <br /> <br />
