<br />PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br />MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28,1998 <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Truscelli, Commissioners <br />Davis, Slusser, and Swope <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: <br /> <br />Commissioners Hughes and Morton <br /> <br />GUESTS PRESENT: See sign-in list attached <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Gary Hover, Manager Mike Gibbons, <br />Secretary Denise Monroe . <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was called to order <br />by Chairperson Pau line T ruscelli at 7 :25pm in Room A of the Red Morton <br />Center, 1120 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />The November minutes were approved as mailed. <br /> <br />CORRESPONDENCE <br /> <br />-A letter was received from Dr. Jeff Filippi concerning the "Music is Instrumental" <br />program. Dr. Filippi will speak about the program under Oral Communications. <br /> <br />-The Commissioners received a copy of a letter from the Alcohol Beverage <br />Control Board concerning an application for a beer and wine permit for a mini. <br />mart at 2303 Spring Street. The location of the mini~mart is across the street <br />from Hoover Park. The Commission decided to refer this matter to the <br />Community Development Department. <br /> <br />-Superintendent Hover reported the balance remaining in the Red Morton Center <br />Fundraising account is $7,228.10. This matter will be placed on the February <br />agenda. <br /> <br />ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> <br />Dr. Jeff Filippi, co-founder of the "Music is Instrumental" program, spoke about <br />this new program which has a goal of collecting 250 music instruments and cash <br />donations to purchase musical instruments for grades 4-8 in Redwood City <br />schools. Dr. Filippi provided information about the program and requested a <br />letter of endorsement from the Commission. The Commissioners all agreed this <br />was a worthwhile project and Commissioner Davis volunteered to write a letter of <br />support on behalf of the Commission. <br /> <br />Enid Brock of 1837 Brewster Avenue spoke about the tall slide at Stafford Park <br />and requested that the slide be removed because it does not meet any current <br />safety guidelines. Superintendent Hover stated he has visited the site and that <br />the slide is not unsafe. New signs have been ordered and will be installed at <br />Stafford which will state that the slide is to be used for ages 5-12. Manager <br />Gibbons noted that several years ago, a representative from the jPA visited <br />each of our parks to identify potential liability problems; Stafford Park was noted <br /> <br />
