H ) j '/,-~vt/t~ PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1988 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairman Swope, Vice-chairman Weiss, Commissioners Anderson, Mortensen and Nordness COMMISSIONERS EXCUSED: Commissioners Howard and Slusser GUESTS PRESENT: Councilwomen Buchan and LaBerge, Fernando Vega, John Rosselli Committee, Al Rollins, Senors Softball STAFF PRESENT: Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Griffiths and Secretary Frei Chairman Swope called the regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. The minutes of the July 13,1988 meeting were approved as mailed with the following correction on page 4. Commissioner Nordness had said that the Charter Street entrance to Hoover Park was missing the new ordinance sign. çorrespondence Chairman Swope received a meeting notice for the Sister City Committee. Commissioner Nordness volunteered to attend the next meeting on August 18,1988,7:30 p.m. at the Port. Committee Reports John Rosselli Committee - Commissioner Mortensen said the Committee was still searching for a facility/park to dedicate to Mr. Rosselli. He turned the presentation over to Fernando Vega. Mr. Vega said the Committee would no longer pursue the Fair Oaks Community Center as the Fair Oaks Advisory Board had recommended (4-3) against the renaming. The next alternative that the committee had. decided on was Hoover Park and Mr. Vega requested the Park and Recreation Commission to make a recommendation. Director Griffiths explained that Hoover Park was involved in several agreements with the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, the Redwood City Elementary School District and the City of Redwood City. A 42 year sublease agreement was entered into last August and modifying all these documents may be difficult. He suggested four (4) parks that have not yet been dedicated as possibilities: Maddux Park, Westwood Park, Shannon Way Playground and the renovated 4ger field. Commissioner Weiss suggested the planned 3/4 acre park adjacent to the new library. Chairman Swope asked that Mr. Vega take these suggestions back to the next John Rosselli Committee meeting on August 17,1988.
