~

~

PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION

MINUTES OF TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14,1989

COMMISSIONERS PRESENT:

Chairman Swope, Vice-chairman Weiss,
Commissioners Howard, Mortensen, Nordness
and Slusser

COMMISSIONERS ABSENT:

None

GUESTS PRESENT:

Vincent Truscelli, prospective applicant

STAFF PRESENT:

Park and Recreation Superintendent Hartman

Chairman Swope called the regular meeting of the Park and Recreation
Commission to order at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Activities
Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. The
minutes of the January 11,1989 meeting were approved as mailed.

Correspondence

Letter from patricia Strat - Commissioner Mortensen stated that he
felt this issue of playground equipment at Shorebird Park might be
raised again even after Shannon Way Playground is developed.
Commissioner Slusser also thought 2 1/2 - 5 years from now there
might be more children in the area and the need for play equipment
might arise. 234 -275 homes are in that area and there ~are no major
intersections or roads to cross to reach Shorebird par'k.

Letter from Craig Smith to Director Griffiths regarding noise and
activity at Stulsaft Park and suggesting changing the hours the park
stays open. Chairman Swope and Vice-chairman Weiss will meet with
Craig Smith to discuss this matter. Commissioner Mortensen also
suggested contacting the Police Department to determine what types
of incidents have been occurring.

ITEM 1 - BOND ISSUE

Superintendent Hartman explained that the bond issue would not be
pursued at this time as the City Council was not in agreement to
initiate it. Commissioner Mortensen firmly believes that a Red
Morton Center facility could pass by itself and should be put on a
bond issue at sometime. Commissioner Nordness said he felt the
climate was right both politically and economically for a bond to
pass in November. Chairman Swope suggested each Commissioner
individually poll the Council to find out their feelings about the
possibility of pursuing a bond for just Red Morton Center.

Commissioner Howard thought the Commission might want to consider
this project in their long range plans - possibly 2 years out.
Commissioner Slusser wondered if this matter should be included in
the city's strategic plan that is currently being developed.
