PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2000 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Davis, Commissioners Joseph, LaBerge, Morton, Swope, Truscelli, and Walsh COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None GUESTS PRESENT: Public Works Superintendent Gordon Mann, Lucy and Ben Fukutome, Pam Gearhart, Betty Travers, Dick Clark, Nita Spangler, Michael Verdone, Polly Layer STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Gary Hover, Secretary Denise Monroe The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairperson Don Davis at 7:32pm in Room 1 at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. Chairperson Davis welcomed newly appointed Commissioner Matthew Walsh to the Commission. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the August meeting were approved as mailed. CORRESPON DENCE -A newsletter from the Santa Clara Valley Audibon Society was received. ITEM 1 - APPEAL OF HERITAGE TREE PERMIT AT 3035 MCGARVEY AVENUE Public Works Superintendent Gordon Mann spoke about four previous tree permits which were denied over the past two years for the removal of four Modesto Ash trees at 3035 McGarvey Avenue. He spoke about the history of the trees and the reasons for denial of the permits. Superintendent Mann mentioned other options available to the homeowner including the installation of root barriers, root pruning and regular pruning according to International Arboriculture standards. Ben Fukutome of 3035 McGarvey Avenue read a formal rebuttal to Supervisor Mann's letter to him dated September 5, 2000. He spoke about the close proximity of the four trees to his house and his neighbor's fence in addition to the trees being very close to each other.
