<br />PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br /> <br />MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2000 <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Davis, Commissioners Joseph, <br />LaBerge, Morton, Swope, Truscelli, and <br />Walsh <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None <br /> <br />GUESTS PRESENT: Public Works Superintendent Gordon Mann, Lucy and <br />Ben Fukutome, Pam Gearhart, Betty Travers, Dick <br />Clark, Nita Spangler, Michael Verdone, Polly Layer <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Gary Hover, Secretary Denise Monroe <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was called to <br />order by Chairperson Don Davis at 7:32pm in Room 1 at the Community <br />Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> <br />Chairperson Davis welcomed newly appointed Commissioner Matthew Walsh <br />to the Commission. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />The minutes of the August meeting were approved as mailed. <br /> <br />CORRESPON DENCE <br /> <br />-A newsletter from the Santa Clara Valley Audibon Society was received. <br /> <br />ITEM 1 - APPEAL OF HERITAGE TREE PERMIT AT 3035 MCGARVEY <br />AVENUE <br /> <br /> <br />Public Works Superintendent Gordon Mann spoke about four previous tree <br />permits which were denied over the past two years for the removal of four <br />Modesto Ash trees at 3035 McGarvey Avenue. He spoke about the history of <br />the trees and the reasons for denial of the permits. Superintendent Mann <br />mentioned other options available to the homeowner including the installation <br />of root barriers, root pruning and regular pruning according to International <br />Arboriculture standards. <br /> <br />Ben Fukutome of 3035 McGarvey Avenue read a formal rebuttal to <br />Supervisor Mann's letter to him dated September 5, 2000. He spoke about <br />the close proximity of the four trees to his house and his neighbor's fence in <br />addition to the trees being very close to each other.
