<br />II <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />'\ <br /> <br />PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br /> <br />MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27,2002 <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Joseph, Vice Chairperson Walsh, <br />Commissioners Davis, LaBerge, Swope and Truscelli <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Morton <br /> <br />GUESTS PRESENT: None <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Recreation and Community Services Managers Adilah Haqq <br />and Eric Newby, Superintendent Gary Hover and Director Corinne Centeno <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was called to order <br />by Chairperson Jeri Joseph at 7:32pm in Room 5 of the Community Activities <br />Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />MIS Truscelli/Swope: To approve the minutes of the February 27, 2001 <br />Commission meeting as mailed. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />CORRESPONDENCE <br /> <br />There were no items of correspondence for the Commission to review. <br /> <br />ITEM 1 - PRESENTATION BY ERIC NEWBY, SPORTS AND AQUATICS <br />MANAGER AND ADILAH HAQQ, YOUTH AND TEEN MANAGER. <br /> <br />Eric Newby shared his 16 year background with the department and his <br />excitement with his current Sports and Aquatics Manager position. He indicated <br />that his overall responsibility involves Adult and Youth Sports and Aquatics. He <br />highlighted: our work with the PAL and ADAL Athletic Leagues including the <br />number of offerings and the costs of each; the Peppermint Patty Girls Softball <br />Program; coordination of field usage in the City; our relationship with Positive <br />Coaching Alliance; the number and type of sports camps being offered this <br />summer; the number of teams and quality of adult sports programs; the small <br />turn out at the Youth Sports Fair and plans to increase participation; new ideas of <br />the Aquatics Program including more private and parent tot lessons and the <br />numbers of people using the Community Activities Building and Red Morton <br />Center. He closed with a review of upcoming special events: Day at the Giants <br />on 8/11/02 and the 4th of July Fun Run. He responded to questions or comments <br />from the Commission on the adult lap swim program, self-sufficiency of the <br />programs, outreach efforts and how to deal with foul balls in the skate park. <br /> <br />
